Bad smell in the car: how to remove it for good in Luxembourg
By the Clean My Lux team · 22 June 2026
Where do bad smells in a car come from?
Bad smells in a car almost always come from molecules embedded in the cabin materials: cigarette smoke, pet hair and urine, spilled food, damp and mould, or sweat absorbed by the seats. These molecules lodge in the fabric, the seat foam, the carpet, the headliner and even the ventilation system. That is why a smell always returns after a few hours, even when the cabin looks clean: the source is deep, not on the surface.
Why air fresheners are not enough
An air freshener, a spray or a scented tree only masks the smell by adding a fragrance on top. As soon as the fragrance fades, the original smell comes back, because the source has not been removed. Worse, the mix of the two can become unpleasant. To remove a smell for good you need two things: physically remove the source with a deep clean, then neutralise the remaining odour molecules, including those lodged where a cloth cannot reach. That is exactly what scented solutions do not do.
First step: a deep clean
Before any odour treatment, the cabin must be deep cleaned. At Clean My Lux this means a full vacuum then a shampoo of the seats, mats and carpet by injection-extraction: a cleaning solution is injected into the fibre then immediately extracted with the dirt and part of the odour compounds. This step removes the physical source of the smell (stains, residue, ingrained dirt). For a well-established smoke or pet smell, this cleaning is essential: applying a treatment without cleaning first would mean treating over the dirt.
Ozone treatment: how it works
Ozone treatment removes the odours that cleaning alone cannot eliminate. A generator diffuses ozone (O₃) in the closed cabin: this gas is a powerful oxidant that destroys the molecules responsible for smells instead of masking them. Its great advantage is that it spreads everywhere, including into the seat foam, the headliner and the ventilation and air-conditioning circuit, where no hand-applied product can reach. After the treatment and a short airing, ozone turns back into oxygen and leaves no scented residue: the cabin simply smells clean and neutral.
Smoke, pets, damp: the most common cases
Ozone is particularly effective on three classic cases. Tobacco smell first, which deeply impregnates the whole cabin and resists ordinary cleaning. Pet smells next, often linked to hair and damp, common for dog owners. Finally mouldy and damp smells, due to a leak, a carpet left wet or a clogged air-conditioning. In all these cases, the combination of deep cleaning then ozone treatment gives the best result, where a simple clean would leave a residual smell.
Price and booking in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, the ozone anti-odour treatment is offered as an add-on to an interior clean, from around €50, right at your home. We always recommend combining it with an interior clean for a lasting result, since ozone neutralises smells but does not replace removing the dirt. You book online by choosing your interior clean and adding the ozone option, and we come to where your car is parked, anywhere in our area. If your car has a stubborn smell you cannot get rid of, this is the most effective solution.
Frequently asked questions
How do you permanently remove a cigarette smell from a car?+
First deep clean the cabin (vacuum + injection-extraction shampoo) to remove the source, then apply an ozone treatment that destroys odour molecules right into the ventilation. Air fresheners alone only mask.
Is ozone treatment effective against pet smells?+
Yes, very effective. Combined with a deep clean of the seats and carpet, ozone neutralises dog and pet smells, including in areas unreachable by hand.
How much does an ozone odour treatment cost in Luxembourg?+
From around €50 as an add-on to an interior clean, at home, at Clean My Lux.
Is ozone safe for the car?+
Yes, used correctly in a closed cabin then aired. After the treatment, ozone turns back into oxygen and leaves no residue. The cabin simply needs airing before driving again.
Do you need to clean the car before the ozone treatment?+
Yes. Ozone neutralises smells but does not remove dirt. A prior interior clean is essential for a lasting result, otherwise the smell can return from the source that was not removed.
