Why insects, sap and tar damage the paint

Squashed insects, tree sap and tar are not just unsightly: they genuinely attack the clear coat. Insects contain acids that, under heat, etch the surface and leave permanent marks if left too long. Sap hardens and sticks to the clear coat, road tar embeds and blackens the lower panels. The longer you wait, the harder it is to remove and the greater the risk to the paint. In Luxembourg, spring and summer (sap, pollen, insects) and road works (tar) are the riskiest periods.

What you must absolutely not do

The worst mistake is rubbing these marks dry or with a rough cloth: you then drag hard particles across the clear coat and create circular micro-scratches. Scraping hardened sap with a fingernail or an object, using an unsuitable harsh solvent, or going through a roller station does not help and can make the damage worse. The rule is simple: these contaminants soften and lift with the right product and gentleness, never by force.

The right method to remove them safely

The safe method is to soften the mark before removing it. You apply a suitable product (insect remover, tar and sap cleaner), let it work, then lift the contaminant gently with a non-abrasive material, before rinsing. For contamination embedded in the clear coat, a clay-bar decontamination removes what an ordinary wash leaves behind and restores a perfectly smooth surface. It all finishes with a protection (wax) that makes future contaminants easier to remove.

Why act fast (especially in summer)

Time works against you. A dropping, an insect or sap left in the sun for a few days can mark the clear coat irreversibly, exactly like bird droppings. In summer, heat speeds up the process. The right reflex is to remove these marks quickly, or to have the bodywork maintained regularly so they do not build up. A car protected by wax also handles these attacks far better.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove embedded insects without scratching the bodywork?+

You soften the mark with a suitable insect remover, let it work, then lift it gently with a non-abrasive material. Never rub dry, as it scratches the clear coat.

How do you remove tree sap from the car?+

With a sap/tar cleaner left to soften the hardened sap, then a gentle lift. Scraping with a fingernail or dry risks damaging the clear coat.

Can insects damage the paint?+

Yes. They contain acids that, under heat, etch the clear coat and leave permanent marks if left too long. Better to act fast.

Does a station wash remove tar and sap?+

Poorly, and at the cost of micro-scratches. Tar and sap are removed with a suitable product and a gentle hand wash, not with rollers.

Do you work at home?+

Yes, we hand-wash and decontaminate your bodywork at your home in Luxembourg, fully equipped and self-sufficient, with no station or rollers.
