Car wash at home or at a station: which to choose?

The real risk of automatic stations

Roller-and-brush gantries are fast and cheap, but they have a major flaw for paintwork. The brushes pass over hundreds of cars a day and pick up dust, sand and residue from the previous vehicle. On contact with your bodywork, these particles act like sandpaper and create circular micro-scratches — the classic 'spider-web' effect (swirl marks) especially visible in sunlight on dark, black or midnight-blue paint. Over time, these micro-scratches dull the clear coat and age the car prematurely.

The real risk of automatic stations

Touchless high-pressure wash: better, but limited

High-pressure jet wash bays (brushless) avoid direct contact and therefore scratches, which is already progress. But the jet alone doesn't lift everything: greasy grime, insect marks, tree sap, dried droppings or dirt ground into the sills resist. Without gentle mechanical action and suitable products, the result stays superficial. It's a decent stopgap, not a real deep clean.

The benefit of hand washing

A well-done hand wash respects the clear coat and cleans where machines can't reach. The two-bucket method (one for shampoo, one to rinse the mitt) avoids reintroducing dirt onto the bodywork. With microfibre mitts, pH-neutral shampoos and dedicated cloths, every area is treated: nooks, wheels, wheel arches, door sills, seals. The result is noticeably cleaner, more durable, and above all free of micro-scratches. It's the only method that truly preserves the paint over time.

The time saved with at-home detailing

The biggest advantage of an at-home wash is time. No drive to the station, no weekend queue, no waiting on site: we come to your home or office car park while you work, run errands or enjoy your family. As we are fully self-sufficient in water (on-board tank) and power (generator), no hook-up is needed on your side. You get your car back spotless without having moved.

Comparison: home, automatic station, high-pressure

To sum up simply: the automatic station wins on immediate price and speed, but loses on quality and paint care. The high-pressure bay is a good occasional compromise, scratch-free but a surface clean. At-home hand washing wins on quality, durability, convenience and preserving the vehicle's value — at a higher cost than a station, admittedly, but justified by an incomparable result. The right choice depends on your goal: a quick fix or genuine maintenance.

Verdict: what to choose for your needs

For a quick clean before an appointment, a station will do. But if you care about preserving your car's value, avoiding micro-scratches and getting a quality result without wasting your time, an at-home hand wash is undoubtedly the best choice. This is even truer for dark cars, recent vehicles under cosmetic warranty, and prestige models. At Clean My Lux, we travel throughout the Luxembourg area to wash and detail your vehicle wherever it is parked.

Frequently asked questions

Does an automatic wash really damage the bodywork?+

Yes, the brushes in automatic gantries pick up abrasive particles that create circular micro-scratches (swirl marks), especially visible on dark paint. Hand washing avoids this risk.

Does an at-home wash need a water point at my place?+

No. We are fully self-sufficient: on-board water tank and generator. No hook-up is needed on your side, wherever the car is parked.

Is hand washing slower than a station?+

The service takes longer than a gantry pass, but since we come to you, you lose no time: no driving, no queue, no waiting on site.

Which option should I choose for a black car?+

Hand washing, without hesitation. Dark paint reveals the slightest micro-scratch: avoiding automatic brushes is essential to keep a deep, glossy finish.
