Why do a car's headlights turn yellow?
Headlights turn yellow because their polycarbonate surface oxidises under UV rays, heat and road spray. The protective coating applied at the factory blocks UV at first, but it wears off over time: once that layer is gone, the plastic dulls, yellows and then turns milky. In Luxembourg as elsewhere, this mainly affects vehicles over five years old, cars parked outside and those exposed to road salt in winter. Yellowing is therefore not surface dirt you can wash off: it is a degradation of the material that must be sanded and re-protected.
Are yellowed headlights really a problem?
Yes. Beyond looks, foggy headlights sharply reduce lighting power at night. A yellowed headlight can lose much of its light output, cutting visibility distance and increasing risk at night or in the rain. It is also checked at the technical inspection: weak or scattered lighting can lead to a remark. Finally, on a car you plan to sell, cloudy headlights instantly suggest a poorly maintained vehicle and push the price down. Restoring them is one of the best cost-to-impact jobs on a car's appearance.
Can you restore headlights yourself?
There are DIY kits (toothpaste, abrasive pastes, sanding kits), but their results are often partial and above all temporary. The main issue: many DIY methods sand the headlight without re-applying a protective coating. The bare plastic regains clarity for a few weeks then yellows again faster than before, sometimes within one or two months. A lasting restoration requires progressive multi-grit sanding, polishing, then applying a UV protection that seals the result. It is this last step, often missing from DIY solutions, that makes all the difference over time.
How does a professional headlight restoration work?
The work concerns the lenses only and happens in three stages. You start by masking the bodywork around the headlight, then sand the oxidised surface in steps, from the most abrasive to the finest grit, to remove the yellowed layer without digging into the plastic. Next comes polishing, which restores clarity. Finally, a UV protection seals the work and delays the return of yellowing. It is a demanding job: each sanding stage must be complete before moving to the next, otherwise hazing stays visible in daylight and the whole lens has to be done again.
Restore or replace the headlight?
As long as the polycarbonate is neither cracked nor letting water in, restoration treats the cause and costs a fraction of a new headlight unit, which often runs into hundreds of euros per headlight depending on the model. Once there is a crack, condensation inside the unit or a degraded reflector, however, sanding achieves nothing: only replacement solves it. That is the first thing to check before starting anything, by eye or on a photo taken at a three-quarter angle.
